Q&A with Christa Simpson

First things first, thank you so much for stopping by to give us a sneak peek into your newest psychological thriller novel, The Black Widow. We have so much to look forward to when this book hits shelves!

Q: In your own words, what is The Black Widow about?

Christa Simpson: Thank you for having me! The Black Widow is about a woman who has relied on revenge to find herself, after a horrible series of events. It is a story following the unusual life of Clarisse Blackwell. She’s a young woman with a tormented childhood, who is emotionally abused throughout college, and becomes tied to a string of unusual and suspect deaths. Life throws her a few curve balls that leave her with nothing left to lose. That makes her dangerous. She turns to revenge to mollify her anxiety and depression. When her brother-in-law, who happens to be a cop, gets involved, things get interesting. The story is a psychological thriller, an unforgettable tale of secrets, deception and dark desires.

Q: What inspired you to write this story? Was there one “lightbulb moment” when the concept for this book popped into your head, or did it develop over time?

Christa: The Dark Secrets Duet is my passion project. I wanted to reach out to people who suffer from emotional or physical abuse, mental illness, or who live with others who have mental health issues and let them know they are not alone! A book is such an intimate thing. You can unleash your own dark secrets, and chat with your readers about them in the privacy of their own reading nook, and others are none the wiser. This book was one that demanded be written. It was a series of moments that had to be unleashed in fiction.

Q: If you had to describe The Black Widow in 3 adjectives, which would you choose and why?

Christa: Intoxicating, sensational, shocking.

It’s an exhilarating, fast-paced story that will command your attend, surprise you with every twist, thrill you with the suspense, and persuade you to understand the Black Widow’s sinister nature.

Q: Tell us about The Black Widow’s protagonists, Clarisse and Parker. Who are they? How would you describe them to someone meeting them for the first time?

Christa: Clarisse is a wild soul with dark hair and light eyes. She is a beautiful, tortured, young woman, with a dark past and an uncertain future. The poor girl can’t catch a break. Her boyfriend died suddenly, and that sent her on a downward spiral. She used to be anxious and quiet, but now she tends to be wild and unruly. She lost everything after the death of her husband—her home, her job, her mind.

Parker is her brother-in-law, living in San Francisco. He’s an attractive man with chestnut eyes, dark lashes and dimples that look strikingly similar to Clarisse’s late husband. Now that Zayne’s dead, he’s Clarisse’s only living relative. He’s a good man, a good cop, a father to the cutest little girl. Their attraction for each other is electric, even more so because it’s morally wrong.

Q: I love suspense novels that take place in a vibrant city. Why do you think the locale is a perfect backdrop for a psychological thriller?

Christa: I’m a sucker for setting stories in locales that have an air of excitement and danger. The Fox Shoppe is a fictitious night club, touted as one of the best hotspots for affluent businessmen in a vibrant city. In all honesty, it’s a breeding ground for bad habits, dangerous connections, and physical violence.

Q: Tell us, why do you write? Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Christa: Everyone. Everything. Everywhere! There are no limits to my creativity. I write because I like to write. Always have. Always will. I love finding that hidden gem in nature and putting it to good use. Writing is a great way to let loose your emotions on fictional characters in fictional situations where no one can get hurt.

Q: No spoilers, of course, but can we expect a plot twist or two in this story? I can’t wait to dig in!

Christa: Yes, there are a few twists! There are few main questions you might be asking:

  1. Is Clarisse the killer?
  2. How will Parker—the cop—react when he learns the truth; and
  3. Will the killer get caught?

I think—I hope!—readers will enjoy the unveiling of all the secrets and the finale of this dark, twisted tale.

Let’s leave it at that, shall we? I’m certainly intrigued. Many thanks to Christa Simpson for taking the time to answer our questions about her newest thriller novel, The Black Widow.
